Seeing...Films | 2018 - 3 Star Reviews

Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Over the last couple of weeks I've been sharing news on the films I watched in 2018 on my Odeon Limitless card, the original post was very long so I've split it out, this week I'm going to share the 4 films I rated as 3 stars.

Please let me know if you have watched any of these and how did you rate them?

Ladybird

To quote Love Island, on paper this was my kind of film but it was a mix of painful to watch as it was set a few years after I’d left high school and while school in Britain is very different from American High schools it felt very raw and while it was nothing like my schooling it was hard for me to watch.

Finding Your Feet

Another film where all the funny clips were in the trailers, it was fun in places and again it was a hard watch as it dealt with dementia and cancer as well as getting old and friendship groups. The general plot is a woman who was quite well off leaves her husband and moves in with her sister in a council flat in London. The sister invites her to a dance class she attends and she reluctantly agrees to go, she makes friends and they all take part in a charity dance to raise money. Fun but would have been better as a 3-part Sunday night BBC1 drama rather than having a cinematic release.

A Wrinkle in Time

I went in with my eyes closed, knowing nothing about the film and I still feel really mixed about it. Which is why it’s sitting slap bang in the middle with a 3-star review. I loved the fairies and the outfit changes, I didn’t like the storyline or know what was going on half of the time but visually it was stunning to watch.

Widows

Again, this looked like my kind of movie, from the trailer it looked like it would be a high body count, lots of shoot 'em ups. But this fell short of the mark for me. It tried too hard and the cast while amazing was lacking in commitment and realism. The backstories felt week and while it did have a couple of nice twisty turns it was missing something for me. Which was a shame, it had a great cast, great location but I can’t put my finger on what I didn’t like. My mum really enjoyed this and prebaby gave it a high 4 if not 5 stars. I know it wasn’t that high for me as I kept clock watching!
