#BlogEveryDayAugust2014 Day 3 - What was the last book you read?

Sunday, August 03, 2014

One of the great thing about blogging is getting to take part in really great things as well as meeting people and making friends.

Beth from Beth Tinkerbell  organised a book swap earlier in the year and when she arranged a second one I jumped at the chance to join in a again.

This time we did things a little bit differently, instead of being paired up with someone and discuss book choices. We were assigned a randomly selected person and given a bit of detail about their reading preferences and let loose to buy them a book.

I got to buy a book for Fleur from Wishes and Tea and I chose Elanor and Park I've just looked on her blog and the last post was her review of it and I'm so pleased she enjoyed it.

Jenny from Sunny Sweet Pea bought my book and I don't think she could have made a better choice for me. I enjoyed it from the first page to the last page.

I'm going to try and review this book. I haven't done a book review for a while so I'm going to be a bit rusty and I'm going to try and not put in any spoilers.

In The Woods - Tana French

What was the book about?

It's a crime novel set just outside Dublin. Detectives are called in to investigate the murder of a teenager in the local woods and it becomes tangled with a cold case from 1984.

Did you enjoy reading it?

I don't want to sound too gushy but I really did enjoy this book, it made me stay up late and I think that is the sign of a good book.

I don't think I have a favourite character in some ways they are all equally likable and dislike-able as the story progressed I kept changing my opinions of  people. If I had to pick a favourite I'd pick one of the people who was always present but not mentioned that much. O'Kelly the Detectives boss. He was a constant and for me he was one of the good guys.

As I was reading this I could imagine it made into a TV Series . Maybe a six part ITV drama. The characters are described really well and I could imagine all of them. I find sometimes I have a picture in my head and all of a sudden there is a line "She moved a stray blonde curl" (crap choice of words) and I think Huh! she's a brunette with a bob! however there was none of that.

What I will say while I guessed part of the ending fairly early on, I still needed to keep reading to find out if I was right, to see how they got their and I was still a little bit shocked and hadn't fully connected all the dots.

Was there anything / anyone you didn't like?

The simple answer is no, it is really well written. It's interesting and as I said before made me stay up late reading it.

There are a few things I would change if I had that kind of power. I would have a different killer, a couple of other plot twists in a different order and more than anything there is an aspect of Detective Ryan I want to know more about.

I haven't searched for any more books by the same author but I'm wondering if the same people crop up in later books and we find out more?

Would you recommend the book?

Yes, I already have. From around page 100 I kept telling my mum how good it was.

If you like crime books go for it. It's a book for grown ups and contains adult themes (Sex, Murder, Rape, Violence) so I'd say 16/18 and older.

I was trying to think of an author to liken it to and I kept thinking Linda La Plante and the one that had their books turned into an ITV Drama. Now who was it , who, who, who (I know I sound like a Hoob)

Only Bloody Linda La Plante!!! Above suspicion. (Great books and a pretty good tv show)

Score out of five?
A massive thank you to Jenny for sending me such a great book and to Beth for organising it!
We have a bit of a saying in my house and it's don't judge a book by it's cover but by it's thickness!

If like us you like a 400 page plus book this is one of them. I'd say it took me From Saturday to Thursday to read this. Mainly on the bus for 1.5 hours a day and a couple of late nights.

I'm off to look for more books by Tana French to take on holiday. I can't buy them too soon as I've got 8 weeks to wait and I can't trust myself not to read them before I go!
